Episodic, compression-driven fluid venting in layered sedimentary basins

چکیده
Fluid venting phenomena are prevalent in sedimentary basins globally. Offshore, these localised fluid-expulsion events archived the geologic record by resulting pockmarks at sea-floor. Venting is widely interpreted to occur via hydraulic fracturing, which requires near-lithostatic pore pressures for initiation. One common driver extreme horizontal tectonic compression, pressurises entire column over a wide region. expulsion leads sudden, local relief of this pressure, then gradually recharges through continued leading episodic venting. Pressure recharge will also pressure diffusion from neighbouring regions that remain pressurised, but combined role compression and has not previously been considered. Here, we develop novel poroelastic model episodic, compression-driven We show together set period. derive simple analytical expression period, demonstrating can significantly reduce period associated with given rate compression. Fast and Slow Compaction in Sedimentary Basins
A mathematical model of compaction in sedimentary basins is presented and analyzed. Compaction occurs when accumulating sediments compact under their own weight, expelling pore water in the process. If sedimentation is rapid or the permeability is low, then high pore pressures can result, a phenomenon which is of importance in oil drilling operations. Here we show that one-dimensional compactio...
متن کاملAdaptive Resonance Theory Based Sedimentary Basins Identification
The objective of this paper is to present identification and recognition of Magneto-telluric data for sedimentary basins using Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART). Several sets of data consisting of 17 phases and 17 apparent resistivity values and their respective tag values are given. These sets of data are used for training the network, and other sets of data are used to test the network. The tes...
متن کاملAbnormal fluid pressures caused by deposition and erosion of sedimentary basins
Gravitational loading or unloading due to deposition or erosion in sedimentary basins is one of the most common mechanisms responsible for abnormal fluid pressures in geologic formations. This paper examines the integrated response of fluid pressures to both deposition and erosion using vertical one-dimensional numerical models. The modeling results show that vertical loading and unloading of s...
متن کاملExperimental and Theoretical Study of Strata Formation in Sedimentary Basins
The long-term goals of our stratigraphy project are to obtain experimental evidence and to develop quantitative models of the formation of strata on continental margins. Experiments and analytical models can greatly contribute to better understand the relationships between variation in forcing functions such as sediment supply, sea-level changes and subsidence, and the resulting strata in depos...
